Emily Smith
How many years have you worked in outdoor recreation?
2 years.
Favourite part of the world:
Narawntapu National Park on Tassie's North-West Coast, and then Punakaiki, on the West coast of New Zealand's South Island. Both beautiful, dramatic beach-scapes.
Favourite food:
Fresh summer fruit salad.
Best habit:
Squeezing the toothpaste from the bottom up. Knowing exactly the right way to use apostrophes.
Worst habit:
Telling everyone else that I know exactly the right way to use apostrophes. Dental flossing with my hair (in emergencies).
Best part of my day:
The happy bits. Usually involves having a laugh with my students (my teaching job is often VERY funny) or some quality time with my partner / family / friends.
Worst part of my Day:
The grumpy bits. Injustices, headaches, and the energy slump you get when you've taught all day but still have to plan tomorrow's lesson before you can go home.
Preferred season:
Summer, for the opportunity to swim in the ocean, eat watermelon and cherries, go on holiday, listen to live music outdoors, and wear frocks.
Favourite way to unwind:
Cooking a meal, or cooking myself in a hot bath. Yoga is good too.
If you could be a Crayon, what colour would you be?
Um, a nice deep greeny-blue. But you'd get very sick of painting oceans. We need all the colours in the crayon box.
Favourite Hobart restaurant:
Sirens in Victoria Street. experimental, bohemian, and (yay!) vegetarian.
The Rain Check Lounge, and Annapurna, both on Elizabeth St, come in equal second.
Favourite music, artist or song:
I love a New Zealand band called Trinity Roots. New Zealand dub in general is lush. This year, I've been getting into a lot of African music too. I've only just discovered Fela Kuti, he's amaaaaazing!
Favourite word/phrase:
In Mongolian, "YOWIE, YOWIE!" means "Let's go!" I love that. And in Maori, 'faiaiipo' means your lover or, literally, 'chaser in the night'.
What's funniest thing someone has asked you?
One of my students recently remarked, "I. am. a. STOVE." (She was trying to say, "I am a student'.) That's not a question, but it was funny at the time.
What do you love most about Team Discovery?
Answering questionnaires when I'm meant to be doing something far more boring. And the shiny bouncy-ness of working with such friendly people.
